My name is Penny and I live in Brisbane, Australia.

I work in marketing and am also a freelance food and travel writer.

I have always had a passion for pastry, and am now planning to take my favourite pastime one step further.

My plan is to learn all of the skills required to become a pastry chef. But the twist is that I will be doing it from home. My own kitchen will be my classroom, my friends and family will be my critics.

And my teachers? Michel Roux, Julia Child, Bo Friberg and Michel Suas to name a few.

Through books, videos, blogs and anything else I can get my hands on I hope to develop my skills and become a self-taught pastry chef.

Under the tutelage of my mentors, I will attempt to master a different element of pastry in each blog entry. While I’m sure this will evolve over time, the idea is to take on doughs, biscuits, creams and chocolate while sharing my experiences and some recipes along the way.

Hopefully this will help other people who want to learn the art of pastry but like me are restrained by time, money or both.

  1. Hi Penny! I relate to your quest and started my blog for a similar purpose (although I was far less focused and more haphazard in my approach- lol) Looking forward to following your adventures 🙂 Best wishes

  2. Hello Penny, I stumbled upon your blog while I was searching for some basic patiserrie recipes. You have a wonderful and easy to follow recipes & tips that I wanted to try for a start. Like you, I would like to ‘move on’ and try my hand to make some ‘out of this world’ desserts for friends and family. Infact, I’m comtemplating to enrol for some short courses at Savour Chocolate & Patisserie school in Melbourne! Well, oh well, one day. Thanks for your lovely blog and will be visiting soon.

    1. Thanks Rachel, I’d love to go to that school myself but unfortunately there’s no equivalent in Brisbane. It’s almost been a year with this blog but I still feel like I haven’t scratched the surface! 🙂
